William Sheldon
William Sheldon theorized that people respond positively or negatively to other people based on their body types. People who have positive feedback about their bodies are usually have a better concept of who they are and have a positive body image. On the flip side, those who get negative feedback about their bodies are usually more stressed and they have a hard time seeing their bodies in a positive light. There are three body types
|
1. Endomorph: Soft bodies that are round in shape and their muscles won't be very developed.
2. Mesomorph: Bodies are hard and muscular. 3. Ectomorph: Tall and thin, their muscles would be smaller and their shoulders would appear slouched inwards. |
Body Image
|
People have a picture of what they want to look like inside their head. They refer to this as their ideal body image or what they think they should look like. Many different things influence an individuals body image; it could be the media, personality, past experiences or a multitude of other things. The problem is that the "ideal body image" can be a far cry of their actual physical appearance. Individuals who have a good sense of their actual physical appearance are usually happier and feel more attractive sexually. It is a good thing to keep in mind that an individuals body image is how they see themselves and NOT how other people see that person. Adolescents are affected differently by their body images. Adolescents may place their self worth on their physical appearance; if they don't have a positive body image then they might feel like they have no worth and vice versa.
